They were acknowledged by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 in a proclamation naming him as Best Entertainment Manager of All Time; he was inducted into Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2014 and his son Michael acknowledged him with a Joe Jackson Day at Neverland. Terminal Reports Emerged Last Week
Last week saw reports emerging on Jacksons pending demise as he continued to battle the effects of cancer. Reports stated that many in the Jackson family rushed to be with Jackson as his health declined. This included his children, grandchildren and wife Katherine.
Joe and Katherine Jackson were married almost 70 years. During the 50’s and 70’s, they became parents to ten children. The first born was Rebbie Jackson, and she was followed by Tito Jackson, Jackie Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Marlon Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Randy Jackson, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. An additional son and Brandon Jackson died shortly after birth.
The Jacksons chose to raise their family in Gary, Indiana and while Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, Michael and Marlon were young, taught his sons to play musical instruments and sing. They later formed the Jackson 5 with the addition of Randy and after signing with Motown Records, became one of the biggest acts for the Detroit based recording studio.
Their first album release was in 1969. It included hits such as Who’s Loving You” and “I Want You Back”. This saw the group gain international attention and set the stage for future hit records and tours.
Joe Jackson was also instrumental in helping daughter Janet launch her career, first as an actress on the hit 70’s show Good Times, then later as a recording artist when she turned sixteen. He worked hard to negotiate contracts and managing her career as her popularity rose. Commenting on her father during an acceptance speech at the Radio Disney Music Awards Janet said,
“My father, my incredible father, drove me to be the best that I can.”
While hugely successful in his professional life, Jackson’s relationship with Michael often took away from those accomplishments. Jackson also fathered another child while separated from Katherine in the 70’s in what later was learned to be an affair that carried on for several decades. While Katherine and Joe never officially divorced, the two lived apart for years.
