It’s been a prolonged time since it was announced that a second Suicide Squad film would be released, with the primary director being James Gunn. After four months of filming this movie with multiple actors, the infamous director went to Twitter to confirm that they’d completed all production efforts. Most aren’t aware that this was the hardest film for James Gun to direct, with him facing multiple heartbreaks on a personal level.
James Gunn first lost his father two weeks before Suicide Squad 2 began filming, which extended to his dog passing away two weeks before production was completed. This means that he barely was provided the time to grieve these two deaths while engaging with one of the most extensive casts he’s ever operated. This doesn’t mean that staff members were ignorant and not understanding of his condition, with James Gunn expressing his gratitude towards castmates for their patience. It’s because of this that he was still able to have a fulfilling experience during a horrendous period in his life.
This director provided his insight on the four-month production through Twitter. It was noted that unlike other films in his past, he was offered complete power over how this movie was written and directed. Gunn also provided context regarding his future with DC Comics, noting that he’s been provided insurances that any future film he desires will be immediately rewarded.
This is the exact opposite to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe operates, with Disney Executives often forcing directors to fall into line or face being fired. It’d eventually happen to James Gunn himself after Disney determined that some mildly-offensive tweets from ten years ago would cause the entire American public not to see another one of his films. This ridiculous mentality was quickly disproved, and Gunn would eventually be re-hired from Marvel.
It should be noted that the upcoming Suicide Squad film isn’t a Soft Reboot of the 2016 film. It’s a direct sequel that’s being revised under the vision of James Gunn. It’ll have one of the most prominent casts in a DC Comics film to date. Confirmed actors returning from the 1st film include Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman and Viola David. New actors attaching themselves to the sequel include Alicia Braga, Taika Waititi, John Cena, Idris Elba, Sean Gunn, Peter Capaldi, Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion. Together all of these characters will form the second rendition of the Suicide Squad.
